It’s been a long time since I had to go back to school but that doesn’t mean that any of the memories of this time of year have faded for me at all.

The feeling of crispy new paper in binders, sharpening brand new pencils and pencil crayons and drawing doodles on the inside page of your notebooks…and most importantly, picking out that perfect pair of sneakers when back to school shopping!
I went through a ton of different phases with sneakers. Firstly, there was the enthusiasm that a child gets when you go to the shoe store, get your tiny foot measured and see that you’ve gone up a 1/2 size. You got to pick out a new pair, and then the old shoes get tossed in the box because you know you’re wearing those shiny new kicks out of the store to wreak havoc!
My mother basically had to force me to wait until the first day of school or my back-to-school shoes would already be scuffed up, covered in mud and dirt or worse! It was all worth it on the first day of school though when you and your buddies would all posse up to trade baseball cards or talk about cartoons and everyone was comparing their new shoes.
Sneakers are just one part of the whole process that sticks out for me and definitely is part of the reason I work in this field now. Did anyone else move around a lot? I had to go to a new school at least 4 times as a kid and each time would be nervous about meeting all the new kids and whether I’d make friends quickly but it was never a big deal!
Now that I’m in the business of selling shoes, this time of year has a different meaning. This is when all of our Fall product starts to roll in almost daily and you can see the excitment in our staff’s faces when a shipment with 20 new styles and colours of Converse or Vans shows up. Everyone crowds around as we price the display models and lace them up, people pick their favourites and talk about which pairs they want to buy or buy for their significant others… we definitely love shoes!
